Jason Smith scored two touchdowns and Will Koras threw a touchdown pass as 14th-ranked Loyola Blakefield posted a 42-6 victory over No. 20 John Carroll in a MIAA non-divisional contest Friday afternoon in Towson.
The Dons scored the game’s first 28 points en route to their first 2-0 since 2014. Last year, John Carroll defeated Loyola, 35-18, in the season debut.
It was a different story Friday as junior linemen Taylor Randolph recovered a fumble on the game’s opening possession. The Dons needed four plays to cover 48 yards as Smith bolted 26 yards to the end zone with 9 minutes, 32 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Loyola (2-0 overall) went 41 yards in nine plays, capped with Omar Whiting’s 6-yard score, to go up 14-0. Koras highlighted the drive with a pair of 13-yard completions (Matt Bell and Tylian Young) on 3rd-and-long.
After an interception by Thomas Keirn, Loyola went 61 yards in three plays as Smith broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run after Koras connected with Whiting for 27 yards. The duo hooked up for a 30-yard touchdown pass, extending the Dons’ lead to 28-0 with 5:36 left before halftime.
John Carroll (0-2), the defending MIAA B Conference champ, finally got on the scoreboard as Nate LeBrun threw a 14-yard pass to Ryan Archibald. Loyola tacked on two more scores in the fourth – a Wade Tucker 1-yard run and Ty Trinh 4-yard touchdown catch from Jeffrey Snider.
Loyola travels to Montgomery County Friday afternoon for a non-league contest with Landon School. John Carroll has a road trip to Pennsylvania’s Episcopal Academy next Friday.
