Playing for its playoff life, No. 7 Mount St. Joseph forged a 3-2 lead at the end of one quarter against No. 5 Loyola Blakefield, Friday, and was within one goal at the half. However, the Dons pulled away throughout the second half to down the Gaels, 15-9, in MIAA A Conference lacrosse.
Seniors Cole Williams and Nick Goles, along with junior Phil Weis each netted hat-tricks to lead the Dons.
Leading 7-6 at the start of the third quarter, Loyola got consecutive scores from Goles, Brendan Doyle, Weis and Williams to move on top 11-6 with 5 minutes, 37 seconds to play.
In the fourth, the Dons led 11-7 when Weis scored two consecutive goals, followed by a score from Alex Caltrider, to increase their lead to 14-7. Senior Brian Coan then added his first goal of the year, with 2 minutes to play, to cap Loyola’s scoring.
Loyola (13-4 overall) is now 5-3 in the league and tied for fourth with Calvert Hall, who the Dons will visit on Tuesday. Whoever wins that contest will be the fourth seed and the loser will be the fifth seed. The pair will then meet again next Friday in the A Conference quarterfinals on the home field of the higher seed.
St. Joe (11-9, 2-6 MIAA A) was eliminated from the post-season with the loss.
