Severn Passing League champions Mount St. Joseph
Last month, Mount St. Joseph High football team let an opportunity slip away. The Gaels atoned Sunday evening, claiming the Severn Passing League title with a 36-24 victory over Archbishop Spalding at Glen Burnie.
After beating Meade (18-12) in the semifinals, Mount St. Joseph handed its MIAA A Conference rival Cavaliers their first loss for the championship. A few weeks ago, the Gaels had a chance to reach the finals of the Ravens Passing Tournament, but dropped an overtime decision to Frederick County’s Tuscarora in the bracket 3rd place game in Frederick.
“It was big for our guys to get some confidence especially because we’re young,” said Gaels coach Rich Holzer, whose team finished 11-1-2 in Severn play. “It’s a good way to get the season started on the right foot and build some momentum. They competed and worked hard.”
Spalding defeated Reginald Lewis, 18-6, in the other semifinal. South River won the junior varsity title.
