After three trips to the MIAA B Conference baseball finals in four years, Boys’ Latin finally broke through with a championship in 2016.

With seven players back from what was a young squad, including five pitchers, the Lakers could be poised for another title.

Headlining the returning Lakers is senior Mark Lopez, a two-time All-MIAA pick in the B Conference and a four-year starter. Lopez is committed to play his college baseball at Johns Hopkins University.

Also back are brothers Zach (Sr.) and Sam Grace (So.). The duo served as the Lakers’ battery in their victory over Severn that clinched the title in last year’s MIAA B final.

Marquise Washington, a senior outfielder who will play at Frostburg State next year, and McDaniel commit senior Matt Purnell (C) are also back, along with All-MIAA pick Matt Luterman (Jr., 3B).

In addition, junior outfielder Cole Jarrett, who homered in the B Conference Tournament last spring to help vault the Lakers into the finals, has returned as have Jackson Gazin (Jr., 2B), Ned Ruffin (Jr., P) and J.P. Woodward (Jr., P).

“The key to our season lies in the tough out of conference schedule to begin the season,” said veteran coach Bill Greenwell. “That should get us ready to compete for another run at the conference championship.”

To that end, BL opened its season with St. Paul’s of the MIAA A Conference on Monday, and routed the Crusaders, 14-1, with Purnell and Jarrett each driving in three runs and Lopez and Gazin adding two RBI’s each.
