No. 6 Boys’ Latin gets defensive for 19th victory; Spencer and Lewis combine for 32 (VIDEO HERE!!)

On a night McDonogh School hoped to celebrate a new all-time leading scorer in boys’ basketball, Boys’ Latin School put together arguably its finest defensive showing on the season Wednesday. The sixth-ranked Lakers defeated the No. 11 Eagles, 55-45, in a MIAA A Conference match in Owings Mills.

Junior guard Cameron Spencer finished with 17 points for Boys’ Latin (19-4 overall), and Kenny Lewis added 15. Kavon Brown led McDonogh with 17 points.

The Lakers smothered McDonogh standout guard Noah Locke, an University of Florida recruit. He needed 24 points to surpass brother Kayel’s all-time school scoring mark (1,938).

Boys’ Latin (8-4 MIAA A), led by senior Jaylin Andrews hounded Locke, who finished with a season-low six points. Locke (1,920) didn’t score in the first half and attempted just two shots as Boys’ Latin built a 32-16 advantage.

The Eagles (12-10, 6-7 MIAA A) battled back in the second half, closing to 48-43 on Brown’s basket with 3 minutes, eight seconds left in regulation. Lewis answered for the Lakers with a 3-point play, pushing their advantage to 51-43.

Boys’ Latin followed with a defensive stop and Edwards, who became the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer Monday evening, added two free throws for a 10-point lead.

The Lakers, who have a postseason spot pretty much locked up, have a non-league match at St. Maria Goretti Friday. They will host McDonogh, Monday afternoon at the Gelston Center.

McDonogh is firmly entrenched with No. 3 spot in the MIAA A Black, but with five straight losses, need to regain momentum. The Eagles host Mount Carmel Friday in a Black Division match.
