Cristo Rey got out and ran in its basketball season opener, Monday, as the Hornets scored 30 fast-break points and raced to a 79-68 victory over Perry Hall Christian.

Senior point guard Jakai Jones had a big night, scoring a game-high 29 points. Jones has been an unwelcome site for Perry Hall Christian, having now scored 53 points in two career starts against the Panthers.

Cristo Rey also got 17 points from senior center Tim Peterson and 12 points from senior guard Mikiah Bailey, who also forced six turnovers and picked up two loose balls. Head coach Eddie Healey, who is now 2-0 in season openers with the Hornets, awarded sophomore Ahmaud Jones with the team’s Hard Hat Player of the Game award after Jones allowed just three points defensively.

The Hornets, who play in the MIAA C Conference, will play A and B Conference over their next five games (Friends, Severn, Loyola, St. Mary’s and Chapelgate Christian) as they seek their first ever MIAA win outside of the C Conference.

Logan Brewer scored 24 points to lead Perry Hall Christian.
