Commander’s 17 points lead No. 13 Patriots to road win

In a battle with early playoff implications in the MIAA A Conference, 13th-ranked John Carroll School went on the road Friday and edged No. 8 Loyola Blakefield, 75-74, in a basketball game that also counted in the Baltimore Catholic League standings.

The Patriots received balance from its leading scorers as four reached double figures, led by 17 points by Tyson Commander. Jalen Bryant added 15, Jeannot Basima scored 15 and Jaiden Jakubowski finished with 14.

Since only three teams from each division in the A Conference make the playoffs, John Carroll greatly strengthened its position as it improved 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the league. The Patriots are in third place in the Red Division, but tied with second place Mount St. Joseph (10-2) in the loss column and only one loss behind division leading St. Frances Academy (9-1).

On the flip side, John Carroll opened up a two-game lead on fourth-place Archbishop Spalding (three in the loss column), which is 7-5 in the MIAA A. Loyola (13-7 overall) fell into fifth-place at 6-5 in the A Conference.

John Carroll is now 4-2, and Loyola is 3-4 in the BCL.
