Mazzola’s goal lifts the Cavs in MIAA A action


For the second consecutive year, the McDonogh boys soccer team fell on the road at Archbishop Spalding as the top-ranked team in the area.

Last year the host Cavaliers held a 1-0 lead when a thunderstorm force the suspension of the contest and, nearly a month later, they went on to down the Eagles 3-1. Friday, some of the same heroes were involved in the victory.

Lucca Mazzola, who scored in last year’s contest and had a golden goal in Spalding’s win over No. 18 Severn earlier this week, scored the game-winner with an assist from Nick Lierena.

In addition, Daniel Ashbeck, who was in the nets for last year’s victory, was back in goal for Friday’s shutout.

Playing in its MIAA A Conference season-opener, Spalding is now 1-1-1 on the season. The Cavs were upset by Annapolis Area Christian of the MIAA B Conference in their opener. McDonogh, which struggled in the first half of its league opener again St. Paul’s, on Wednesday, before going on to a 3-1 victory, is now 1-1 in the conference and 2-1 overall.
