No. 1 St. Frances moves on to MIAA A final four match with Boys’ Latin; Diop and Moore post double-doubles
After clinching the top seed in the MIAA A playoffs last Friday, St. Frances coach Nick Myles started worrying about facing Mount Carmel in the opening round. The Cougars reached the MIAA A and Baltimore Catholic League tourney final last season. More fresh in Myles’ memory bank was Mount Carmel’s victory as No. 8 seed over the top-seed Panthers in east Baltimore in the BCL first round several seasons ago.
There was no surprise Tuesday as the No. 1 Panthers posted a 64-42 quarterfinal decision at Phelps Gym. Senior post Koran Moore had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Bass Diop finished with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The East Chase Street school established a 22-7 first quarter advantage en route to its area-best 32nd victory. St. Frances will host No. 5 Boys’ Latin School – a 56-54 victor Tuesday over sixth-ranked St. Vincent Pallotti – Thursday evening for a spot in the MIAA A title game Sunday evening at Harford Community College.
Jordan Toles added 11 points and two steals, and Rajeir Jones, who was named BCL Defensive Player of the Year Monday, finished with 10 points. Sophomore point guard Adrian Baldwin handed out 13 assists and pulled down nine rebounds.
Mount Carmel fell to 12-23. The Cougars next play at Mount St. Joseph in a Baltimore Catholic League tourney quarterfinal Feb. 28.
