Dragons’ Beglan makes a bid for perfection

Glenelg Country pitcher Alex Beglan was nearly perfect, Tuesday afternoon, retiring the first 19 batters he faced, before allowing three late runs to lead the Dragons to a 4-3 victory over Gerstell Academy in MIAA BConference baseball action in Ellicott City.

GCS scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning on an RBI single by Marcus Khademi and a ground out by Cole Sterry. The Dragons tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on RBI singles by Sterry and Marcus Arterburn. These insurance runs turned out to be critical as Gerstell mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning.

A double by Brennan Sedney followed by RBI single by Matthew Szedlock cut Gerstell’s deficit to 4-1. Four batters later Max Friedman laced a two-run single to cut the Dragons’ lead to 4-3. However, Friedman was thrown out at second on a steal attempt to end the game.

On the mound, the Falcons’ Reece Early battled back after a shaky first inning to shut down the Dragon lineup giving up no hits between the 2nd and 6th innings. He struck out nine.
