The start of the 2019 area high school football season is less than a week away. Private schools hit the practice field a couple of weeks ago while public programs began practice this past Wednesday.

Friday evening, McDonogh School visited St. Mary’s for a scrimmage. The Saints have won the past two MIAA B Conference championships while McDonogh struggled to a 3-6 finish in 2018.

The Eagles are hoping for a rebound in 2019 with seniors Curtis Jacobs and Kris Jenner. Jacobs, a Penn State University commit, is regarded as one of the nation’s top linebackers, and Jenner, a second-year starter, is committed to Columbia University.

The Owings Mills school have an experienced cast back with senior Giovanni Procaccini  (defensive back/wide receiver), senior Jackson Bonitz (running back/linebacker) and senior linemen Chase Kirol and Beau Bedard. The Eagles open their 2019 campaign at defending Philadelphia Inter-AC champ Malvern Prep.

St. Mary’s have won the last two MIAA B crown, but the Annapolis school is focus on building a foundation in 2019. The Saints will rely on a strong running game with senior running back Alex Wicks and center Will Berzins, a 2019 Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick. Dhane Blair (defensive back) and BTC Super 22 linemen Keith Day will anchor the defense.
