Cardinals eyeing MIAA A championship

Cole Herbert (1) emerged as a standout at wide receiver last season for Calvert Hall. The Cardinals won a school-record 12 games in 2018.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season a few weeks away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Calvert Hall College Cardinals

2018 record: 12-1 (Maryland Christian Schools Invitational champion)

Overview: The Cardinals overcame the midseason loss of senior quarterback Mike Campbell to win a school-record 12 games. Running back Sean Tucker, a Syracuse commit, senior wide receiver Cole Herbert (both 2018 all-MIAA A selections) and junior quarterback Amir Jenkins return for Calvert Hall’s offense and senior linebacker Khalil Glover (Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick) will lead the defense.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Mount St. Joseph. The Gaels handed Calvert Hall its lone loss last year and should contend for the MIAA A Conference title in 2019. Running back Marlowe Wax, a Syracuse commit, and junior quarterback Billy Atkins are expected to be main clogs of another explosive offense while BTC Super 22 picks Nate Slutzky (linebacker) and Tyler Leavy (line) return on defense.

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Loyola Blakefield. The Dons will be much improved as they will match with their Towson rivals for the historic 100th meeting on Thanksgiving morning. Loyola is scheduled to return 12 starters, led by junior defensive back/wide receiver Jordan Moore, who holds early scholarship offers from Boston College and Syracuse.
