Breakdown of Panthers’ 2017 schedule
With practice for the 2017 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
St. Frances Academy Panthers
2016 record: 10-2 (MIAA A Conference champion)
2016 review: The Panthers went from winless in MIAA A play in 2015 to their first MIAA A crown and No. 1 area ranking. The east Baltimore school, which will have former longtime Gilman School coach Biff Poggi sharing coaching duties with Henry Russell, have a talented roster featuring Maryland commit Jaelyn Duncan, receiver Randy Fields (West Virginia) and senior defensive end Eyabi Anoma, the area’s top senior prospect.
2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 63-49 (.563)
Toughest 2017 opponent: IMG Academy. The Florida private school, once known as a tennis training destination, has become a national prep football power (ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25). Senior defensive tackle Taron Vincent (committed to Ohio State), who played at Gilman as a freshman and sophomore, is one of eight Rivals.com Top 100 prospects on the Ascenders’ roster.
Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Archbishop Spalding. The Cavaliers finished second in the MIAA A last year, only losing to St. Frances in a thrilling contest at Patterson Park. The Anne Arundel County school graduated a talented senior class, led by quarterback and VSN Offensive Player of the Year Evan Fochtman, but will be explosive offensively again with all-league receiver Jamari Jones leading the charge.
