Boys’ Latin, which soared into the VSN boys basketball poll at No. 14 this week, also took flight in the second half of its MIAA B Conference basketball game, Monday evening in Roland Park, outscoring visiting Chapelgate Christian by 27 points over the final two quarters to register 80-53 victory.
The Lakers (12-3 overall), remained unbeaten in the B Conference with an 8-0 mark, after surviving an early surge by the Yellow Jackets.
Chapelgate (8-10, 3-6), which gives an inspired effort every time out, started fast and led by as many as six points in the first half, but the Lakers stayed close and they were able to forge a 34-34 tie at the half. In the third quarter, BL stepped up its defensive effort, which opened the way to a Laker scoring spree.
The Lakers outscored Chapelgate by 11 in the third quarter and dominated the final period with a 28-12 edge.
The surge was triggered by the outstanding defense and rebounding of senior Brendan Fields, who launched several the fast breaks with 12 rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Blair Brooks led all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field and going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Casey Rees added 19 points for the Lakers, while Jordan Brooks scored 16 and Colin Heacock had 15 points and six assists. Chapelgate was paced by Chris and Malik Grandy, who combined for 30 points.
