Breakdown of Eagles’ 2017 schedule
With the start of practice for the 2017 high school football season approaching, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Annapolis Area Christian School Eagles
2016 record: 8-3 (MIAA C Conference finalist)
2016 review: The Eagles’ bid for a repeat in the MIAA C was denied by St. John’s Catholic Prep in the title game. The Anne Arundel County school should be in the championship hunt this season with all-league performers Sam Akinmukomi, Robert Johnson, Thaddeus “TJ” Stanfield (wide receiver/defensive back), Cameron Williams (wide receiver/defensive back) and quarterback Isiah Williams back.
2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 23-26 (.562)
Toughest 2017 opponent: St. John’s Catholic Prep. The Vikings won the MIAA C crown last fall (fourth since 2007) and set to return most of their roster. Joey Keys (linebacker), Dennis Pittinger (center/defensive tackle) and Andrew Shanley (running back/safety) were all-league performers last season.
Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Severn School. Duane Ward, who succeeded Chris Kirchenhiter (stepped down in January after six seasons), makes his coaching debut. The MIAA B squad defeated AACS last season, 27-20, behind Dylan Gergar (scored winning touchdown on interception return, kicked two field goals and converted three extra points), who returns after earning all-league honors last fall.
By a number: 17. Point differential in AACS’ three losses last season.
