Cavaliers senior QB throws for four first half TD’s in a 49-0 rout
No. 2 Archbishop Spalding has proven to be too much to handle for each of its opponents thus far this season and that was especially true on Friday when the Cavaliers traveled to East Baltimore for an A vs. B MIAA football encounter at Archbishop Curley.
Spalding senior quarterback Nick Gutierrez had a huge first half, throwing four touchdown passes, including three on fourth down, to help the Cavaliers storm out to a 49-0 halftime lead and they cruised through the second half with a running clock on the roll.
Spalding scored on all five of its first half possessions, including a 44-yard score on a fourth down screen pass to senior Jalen Robertson. Curley appeared to have Robertson stopped short of the first down twice, but each time he broke tackles before breaking into the clear for the first score of the day.
Also in the first half, Guiterrrez completed scoring strikes of 28-, 26- and 27-yards to Jordan Pennick, Max Moss and Rolando Newton, respectively. In addition, Jordan Harris scored on a 1-yard run for the Cavs early in the second quarter.
Spalding’s next touchdown came early in the fourth quarter as backup quarterback Malik Washington connected with Moss on a 13-yard slant. Aeneas Smith then recovered a fumble deep in Curley territory later in the quarter, eventually leading to a 3-yard touchdown run, again on fourth down, by the Cavs’ Kaden Curtis.
Spalding (4-0) scored more than 40 points for the third consecutive game and pitched its second consecutive shutout. Curley dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
