Nationally-ranked Good Counsel rolls No. 4 Mount St. Joseph; Palmer scores 3 TDs

In its first two games, Mount St. Joseph High’s offense was a juggernaut.

Sunday, the Gaels ran into a buzzsaw. Good Counsel of Montgomery County handed the Irvington school a 58-6 thrashing at Dancel Field in rainy Olney.

Latrele Palmer rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, for the Falcons. Mekhi Smith, Lejay Hatcher and Darion Crawford each added a rushing score.

Good Counsel (2-0 overall), ranked 19th in the latest USA Today Super 25, induced a running clock with three minutes left in the first half, handing Mount St. Joseph (2-1) one of its biggest losses in years.

In the final game of 2010, Mount St. Joseph lost, 49-7, to Gilman School.

After putting up more than 800 yards in victories over St. Mary’s Ryken and Holy Spirit (NJ), Mount St. Joseph had only 131 yards Sunday. The Gaels, who scored 84 points in those games, scored on the final play of the game Sunday as Billy Atkins threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Kahri Barfield.

Mount St. Joseph’s offense wasn’t able to gain traction under a steady rain, trailing 10-0 after the opening quarter. It quickly deteriorated for the Gaels in the second quarter.

After a Gael drive stalled in Good Counsel’s territory, Atkins had his punt blocked. Curtis Walker scooped up the ball and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown, extending the Falcons’ lead to 16-0 with 5:45 remaining before halftime.

After a 13-yard Gael punt gave Good Counsel possession at the visitors’ 35, Palmer scooted untouched up the middle for a touchdown with 5:12 left. The Gaels fumbled the ensuing kickoff after a hit by Caleb Dennis, and Miles Cross returned it 15 yards, making it 30-0 with 5:04 left.

The mistakes kept coming for Mount St. Joseph as running back Marlowe Wax fumbled after a short gain. Four plays later, Palmer scored his third touchdown of the half – a 2-yard score – starting the running clock.

Wax rushed for 73 yards while Atkins, who passed for more than 640 yards in the first two games, finished just nine of 26 for 59 yards.

The Gaels look to rebound Saturday against Silver Oak Academy.
