Gaels roll to a 63-40 BCL victory in a battle of unbeatens


A pair of unbeaten teams squared off in a Baltimore Catholic League basketball game, Wednesday night in Hagerstown and host St. Maria Goretti rallied from a big first quarter deficit to win going away, 63-40.

Loyola, which came in at 3-0 including a win over Archbishop Spalding in its BCL opener, was red hot early, racing to an 18-7 lead on the strength of its outside shooting.

Goretti (6-0 overall, 2-0 BCL) , however, cranked up its defense in the second quarter and kept locked down tight as the Dons managed just 10 points over the next two quarters combined. The Gaels outscored the Dons 18-4 in the second quarter to take a 25-22 halftime lead and then blew the game open with a 25-6 surge in the third.

Goretti’s defensive effort was led by Abdou Tsimbila, who blocked five shots and grabbed 13 rebounds to go with seven points.

The scoring load was led by R.J. Blakney’s 15 points, as well as 12 from Josh Mack and 11 from Przemek Golek.

Cameron Shaw paced Loyola (3-1, 1-1) with 11 points and J.J. Halaby added nine.
