Dragons rout Park for their 10th win in their last 11 games; MIAA B Conference playoff seeding breakdown
Glenelg Country had its eye on clinching first place and the top seed for the MIAA B Conference baseball playoffs, when it visited Park School, Monday, and the Dragons used those eyes to draw 12 walks in a 9-1 victory over the Bruins, locking up that coveted top seed.
The Dragons (17-2 overall, 15-2), who entered the VSN Baseball Top 20 for the first time this week at No. 20, also used their legs, stealing a whopping 15 bases.
Tommy Berbert led the offense with two doubles and he drove in five runs. Kevin Gamble also contributed two hits, including a lead-off double on the first pitch of the game.
GCS used three pitchers to combine for the win. Gamble started and went 2.1 innings, Marcus Khademi pitched 2.2 innings and Brian Hammond closed out the final two innings. They combined to limit the Bruins to just four hits while striking out seven.
Glenelg Country will close its regular season on Tuesday at home against St. Vincent Pallotti (14-7, 12-5), which is seeking to lock down the second seed and the other first round bye in the double-elimination tournament. Pallotti defeated Gerstell, 11-9, on Monday.
Three-time defending champion Boys’ Latin (11-5) currently sits in third place in the league. The Lakers have two league games to play, Tuesday at home against St. John’s Catholic Prep and Wednesday at Severn, as they hope to climb over Pallotti into the second position.
With one league game remaining each, Gerstell and Mount Carmel are tied for fourth at 11-6 in the conference. Gerstell will host Park on Tuesday and Mount Carmel will play at Annapolis Area Christian, also on Tuesday.
AACS goes into that final game with a 9-8 league record and the Eagles are locked in as the sixth seed for the playoffs.
