Brijbasi powers in the game winner in the second half
For second consecutive game, the Loyola Blakefield soccer team controlled possession and created plenty of chances. And, for the second consecutive game, the Dons suffered a 1-0 loss.
After falling to Boys’ Latin in overtime on Wednesday, Loyola returned to Roland Park to match-up with Gilman in the Greyhounds’ season opener and the Dons were thwarted at every offensive turn.
Gilman’s defense dominated the action in front of its goal and goalkeeper Ethan Chodnicki repeatedly made big stops, including a handful of the spectacular variety as the Greyhounds pitched the shutout.
As the clock wound under 15 minutes to play in the second half, the Hounds played a ball out to the right wing for Josh Melancon, who took one dribble before centering above the box to a streaking Elijah Brijbasi who hit a one-timer with his right foot inside the left post for the game’s only goal.
Loyola (0-2) continued to apply pressure down the stretch and Gilman continued to respond. In the closing seconds Brijbasi dropped back into the box and made two consecutive blocks to help run out the clock.
The game was delayed three times due to weather, including a 40 minute delay at the start of the game and another long delay prior to the start of the second half.
