Gilman School got off to a slow start, Saturday, in the championship game of its own Sherm Bristow Tip Off Tournament, but rallied to defeat Virginia’s T.C. Williams, 63-58, to capture the basketball title.
Gilman erased 23-15 deficit at the end of the first quarter by outscoring T.C. Williams 14-1 in the second quarter to take a 29-24 lead into the half. Gilman held off a push from the Titans that brought the score back to even, early in the fourth quarter, before guards Jalen Rucker and Donald Duncan carried the Hounds down the stretch.
Both Duncan and Rucker were named to the All-Tournament team and Rucker was named MVP after scoring 27 points in the championship game. He also had four assists and six rebounds.
With the victory the Greyhounds improved to 3-0 on the young season. They will visit top-ranked Mount St. Joseph on Monday to open up their MIAA A Conference schedule.
