Area public squads look to reach state football Elite Eight; McDonogh and Mount St. Joseph set to decide MIAA A championship

The second week of area postseason play continues Friday evening with the second round of the state public tournament. Thirty-one local teams will try to advance to the state quarterfinals.
The MIAA will crown its champions Saturday at Archbishop Spalding’s Whittles Field. St. Mary’s and St. Vincent Pallotti meet again for the B Conference title while Mount St. Joseph and McDonogh School will decide the A champion.
Below is the top five games of the weekend, followed by the complete area schedule.
Fairmont Heights at Loch Raven (8-2)
What: Class 1A South Region second round
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
What you need to know: In its first postseason since 2005, Loch Raven, which won eight games the previous five seasons combined, looks to beat a Prince George’s County squad for the second straight week. Fairmont Heights routed Prince George’s County rival Friendly, 44-12, last week.
No. 17 Liberty (7-3) at No. 19 Glenelg (7-3)
What: Class 2A West Region second round
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
What you need to know: Two of the best programs in the western section of the Baltimore region meet for a spot in the 2A Elite Eight. Glenelg got 160 yards and two touchdowns from Kyle Dry in a 31-14 opening round victory over Century. Liberty gained its second all-time postseason victory as senior quarterback Nate Kent threw for a score and ran for another and Peyton Scheufele caught two passes in a 51-13 rout of Oakland Mills.
No. 18 Marriotts Ridge (8-2) vs. No. 15 Westminster (8-2)
What: Class 3A East Region second round
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
What you need to know: After getting its first postseason victory (defeated Atholton 17-14) last weekend, Marriotts Ridge looks to punch its ticket to the 3A Elite Eight. Westminster got three touchdowns from running back Nate Mattingly in a 47-28 first round victory Long Reach.
No. 14 St. Mary’s (8-3) vs. No. 13 St. Vincent Pallotti (9-1)
What: MIAA B Conference final
When: Saturday, 3 p.m.
Where: Archbishop Spalding
What you need to know: Pallotti looks to complete a perfect run through the B with a second title in four seasons. The Saints, who defeated the Panthers in last year’s final, will try to become the first team to win three straight MIAA titles since Gilman School (won A titles from 2004 to 2006). The Panthers rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter for a 28-24 victory over St. Mary’s last month at Fairland Regional Park.
