After back-to-back MIAA C Conference championships, Gerstell Academy has moved up to the B Conference and appears content on competing for another title, after knocking off No. 16 Boys’ Latin, 3-2, Wednesday in Finksburg.
Gerstell (6-0, 1-0), playing its first game in its new conference, fell behind early in the first half, before rolling off three straight goals and going on to the one goal victory.
Luke Gardner, off a header feed from Braden Silcott, tied the contest in the seventh minute. The Falcons went on top for good in the 23rd minute, as Ryan Lanza banged home a cross from Casey Gruber. Two minute later, Ben Higgin got loose on a fast break and score unassisted to send Gerstell to the half with a two goal advantage.
While it was the Falcon offense that lead the way in the first half. In the second half, It was the Falcon defense, led by senior goalkeeper Brett McLaughlin and his defensive backs Casey Clark, Josh Tabak, Billy Bauhof, Austin Lyons, Jake Gardner, Nick Mount, Lanza, Gardner and Ryan Jordan that secured the win.
Boys’ Latin (1-3, 1-1) scored its second goal in the 73rd minute. McLaughlin had 17 saves with eight of them occurring in the last 20 minutes of the match.
