Two teams fighting for wins and playoff seeds in the MIAA B Conference met in Carroll County, Tuesday, and host Gerstell Academy came away with an important 61-57 win over Chapelgate Christian Academy.
The Falcons got a dominant performance from Brad Witt, who scored 23 points, while Anthony Carpenter fadded 11 points for Gerstell. Chapelgate had three scorers in the double digits with Jason Murphy, Cliff McEachin, and Odell Dickerson combining for 32 points.
Gerstell started slowly with only eight points in the first quarter, but the Falcons rallied to take a 26-25 lead at the half. The score stayed close throughout the game, with Gerstell finally pulling away with 21 points in the fourth quarter. Highly important was their near perfect free throw shooting performance, going 15-for-17 on the night. In comparison, Chapelgate failed to capitalize on more opportunities by going just 9-for-20 from the line.
The victory allowed Gerstell to even its overall record at 11-11 and its league record at 4-4. The Falcons are now in second place in the Black Division, but still in tight battle with Friends School (4-5) and Archbishop Curley (3-4) for the division’s final two playoff spots.
The loss puts Chapelgate (10-15 overall) further behind in the playoff chase. The Yellow Jackets are now 3-6 in the league and in last place in the Red Division, two-and-a-half games off the playoff pace, with four games to play.
