Patriots score three times in the fifth to turn back the Dons


John Carroll traveled to Towson, Monday afternoon, to open its 2021 MIAA A Conference baseball campaign against Loyola, at Blakefield, and the Patriots scored eight times over a three inning stretch to come away with an 8-5 victory. The contest was halted after six innings due to darkness.

Tate Gerringer had two hits in four trips, including a double, driving in three runs and scoring another to pace the Patriot lineup.

Loyola jumped on top with two runs in the bottom of the first, but John Carroll responded with four in the third, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Griffin Shirk drew three walks and scored a pair of runs for the Patriots, while Mason Deletis also came around to score twice.

Ben Pierce, in relief of starter Matt Archibald, pitched 2.2 innings to gain the win. He allowed two runs because of five walks, but did not allow a hit and struck out four.

Josh Braxton had a double and an RBI for Loyola, while Ryan Wright scored a run and drove in two.
