Mount Saint Joe kept their MIAA A Conference baseball playoff hopes alive with a clutch, 5-3, win over top-ranked Calvert Hall, in Towson on Thursday afternoon.  Senior righty Joel Kenney went 6.1 strong innings for the Gaels to get the win, and sophomore Zach Stoll picked up the save.

The Cardinals were down by two runs, and had runners on first and second with one down in the seventh, when Stoll got the last two outs of the game on strikeouts.

Kenney scattered six hits, and he pitched out of trouble in the third and fourth innings, when the Hall left two men on base in each frame.

“I threw a lot of curve balls today,” said Kenney. “The curve-ball was working really well.  I was able to get them to look at it, and after a while, they started swinging at it. I was mixing that up with the fastball, and the fastball was working really well.”

Stoll said, “We had a great pitching job by Joel.  I just came out here and tried to do what he had been doing the whole game. I was spotting up with my fastball.”

The Gaels (10-11,6-7) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second against junior Nick Delp, keyed by a RBI double by Ed Nottingham. They added one in the fifth, aided by a Calvert Hall miscue, and one in the seventh when Peter Crawford got an RBI single. Delp suffered his first loss of the season, against seven wins.

The Hall (17-4, 10-3) got single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh. David Gately led the Hall offense with a double and two singles, and Alex Kriss had two hits and two RBI.

Nottingham had two hits, a RBI and a run scored for the Mount, and Tony Caporlette had a singe and a double.

The win kept the Gaels in playoff contention.  They will host Loyola (3-8) on Sunday. The Dons currently resides in seventh place in the conference.

Kenney said, “We just keep believing; if there’s a will, there’s a way, and we’re working hard.”

Calvert Hall is still in first place, a half game ahead of Archbishop Curley (9-3). The Friars visit Saint Paul’s (8-4) on Friday.
