MSJ gets goals from three different plays; McDonogh, Calvert Hall and Gilman also open league with wins
Kicking off its 2017 season, Friday afternoon at home in Irvington, No. 2 Mount St. Joseph overcame a scoreless first half to blank visiting Archbishop Spalding, 3-0, in MIAA A Conference soccer action.
The first goal of the day was scored 15 minutes into the second half, as freshman Van Danielson hit a cross that Jake Mazzei headed home.
John Sloop score the Gaels second goal, when he hurried a rebound and Diego Guerrero capped the scoring with a penalty kick.
Next up for the Gaels (1-0, 1-0 MIAA A) is a huge early season showdown with No. 1 Archbishop Curley, on Tuesday at Curley. Spalding (0-3, 0-1 MIAA A) will also return to action on Tuesday, as it visits defending champion Calvert Hall
No. 7 Calvert Hall 1, St. Paul’s 0
Defending MIAA A Conference soccer champion Calvert Hall opened its season and its title defense, Friday, with a 1-0 home win over St. Paul’s.
Jake Saudek scored the game’s only goal at the 22 minute mark of the first half and the Calvert Hall (1-0, 1-0 MIAA A) defense, led by goalkeeper Spencer Nattans (4 saves) made it stand up for the win.
It was also the season opener for the Crusaders (0-1, 0-1 MIAA A).
No. 3 McDonogh 3, John Carroll 0
Andrew Privett had a goal and an assist and Casey Settleman had a pair of assists, Friday, as No. 3 McDonogh opened its 2017 boys soccer campaign with a 3-0 MIAA A Conference shutout of John Carroll.
Jacob Steinberg and Aidan Welsh also scored goals for the Eagles
No. 18 Gilman 2, No. 11 Loyola Blakefield 0
No. 18 Gilman scored off two set pieces in the first half and played spotless defense to defeat No. Loyola Blakefield, 2-0, in the MIAA A Conference opener for both teams.
Gilman is now 2-0 overall, while Loyola is 1-1-1 overall.
