Quakers complete season-sweep of No. 12 Concordia Prep; Severn and Gerstell also prevail in the MIAA B Conference
Friends School and Concordia Prep have been the two dominant teams in MIAA B Conference soccer over the last two years, having played each other in the last two league championship games with each capturing a crown. This fall they are once again leading the pack in the B Conference, but on Monday, 15th-ranked Friends took a huge step forward with a 3-1 win over the 12th-ranked Saints, completing a sweep of their two regular season meetings.
Similar to Friends’ 1-0 win earlier this year, this was a match-up of Concordia’s ability to possess and the Quakers’ ability to defend. In the end, the Quakers defended brilliantly and took advantage of the offensive opportunities which presented themselves.
The game’s first goal came 15 minutes in when John Groff won the ball in midfield and Alex Shine beat his man and crossed from the left. The Concordia keeper then pushed the ball into the path of Friends’ winger Harry Deller, who scored from 5-yards out. The Quakers made it 2-0, about 10 minutes later, when Pierce Cullen launched a long free kick into the Concordia Prep box where junior captain Ned Forbush headed it home to make it 2 0 at the half.
Concordia threw numbers forward early in the second half, but it was Friends which went up 3-0 when a corner from Shine was headed goal bound by senior Christian Barnes and then tipped in on the goal line by senior Mason Marchetti, five minutes into the second half.
Concordia scored late to make it 3-1, but then went down to 10 men after two yellow cards, cutting short the Saints’ comeback bid.
Friends is now 10-2 overall and 10-2 in league play, six points clear of the pack, in first place. The Saints fell to 10-2 overall and 8-2 in the conference. They are currently tied for second place with Saints Peter & Paul.
Elswhere in the B Conference on Monday, Severn school topped Park School, 4-3, in overtime, on the road.
Colin McCarthy scored three of Severn’s four goals including the game winner in overtime. Davis Cawlfiled also scored for the Admirals, while Sam Brighton and Jake Van Giesen had assists.
Severn (7-5-1, 6-4) outshot Park (5-6, 4-6), 12-7 and had 6-3 edge in corners.
Also on Monday in the B Conference, Gerstell Academy captured it first league win of the season, blanking Glenelg Country School, 2-0, to avenge an earlier loss to the Dragons (4-9-1, 2-9-1).
Senior Jack Ebner and freshman Kaden Major each scored a goal each for the Falcons (2-10, 1-10).
