Quakers book a date in the MIAA B championship with Concordia

After three consecutive MIAA B Conference soccer championships by Severn School there will be a new title holder crowned in the league come Sunday afternoon and it just might be the Friends Quakers, who officially ended the Admirals reign by defeating them 4-0 in a semifinal playoff game, Thursday at Friends.

The Quakers, the top seed and holders of a 16-1-1 record will square off with Concordia Prep on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at Anne Arundel Community College. Concordia, which won the MIAA C Conference title one year ago, earned its way back to AACC with a 3-0 semifinal win over Annapolis Area Christian, also on Thursday.

Friends grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Ned Forbush play a ball forward to Steve Bogusky, who ran onto it and passed it far post in the 10th minute. Five minutes later, Friends went up 2-0, when Paul Benzer made a reverse pass to Forbush who took advantage of a 1v1 situation and scored.

It went to the break with the Quakers on top 2-0, but Severn pressured early in the second half in an effort to get back into the contest. Friends absorbed the effort and eventually the game opened up. The Quakers took advantage, getting Mike Klausner free behind the Admirals’ back line and his cross resulted in a Severn hand ball and a penalty kick. Klausner stepped up and buried the PK for a 3-0 lead, with 25 minutes to play.

Friends scored its final goal with 20 minutes left when Bogusky snuck through again, with an assist from Benzer, and volleyed it home.
