Quakers prevail over Indian Creek in MIAA B Quarterfinals; Chapelgate Christian also advances to the semifinals

Third-seeded Friends School and fourth-seeded Chapelgate Christian Academy prevailed in Tuesday’s MIAA B Conference basketball quarterfinal playoff games as the Quakers and Yellow Jackets each advanced to Thursday’s semifinals.

Friends (17-10) made some history as the Quakers won their first playoff games in 17 years with a 57-47 home win over sixth-seeded Indian Creek School (8-15), which upset the Quakers one week ago.

Thirteen was a lucky number for Friends as both J.P. Vassor and Quincy Marchelya, both seniors, led the Quakers with 13 points each. Freshman Kedrick Curtis chipped in with nine points.

The Quakers led wire-to-wire this time, building a 27-18 lead after one quarter. Indian Creek trimmed a 10-point third quarter deficit to five, at 43-38, with six minutes to go in the game. The lead dwindled even further, to three, with four-and-a-half minutes to play, but the Quakers gradually pulled away down the stretch for the 10-point victory.

Indian Creek senior Devin Young closed out his high school career with a game-high 21 points.

In Ellicott City, Chapelgate Christian (15-17) advanced to a semifinal date with a 74-61 win over sixth-seeded Severn School (10-16), as Lance Richards erupted for 23 points lead the way.

Jax Felder poured in 16 points, all in the second half, for the Yellow Jackets and Zach Knox scored 14.

Severn’s Adam Angwafo capped a big year with a 20-point performance, while Was Sturdivant scored 14 and Justin Queen and Baylin Groff combined for 21 points.

For Thursday’s semifinals, Chapelgate Christian will travel to top-seeded Archbishop Curley (21-6) for a 5:00 p.m. tip. The Friars swept their two regular season meetings with Yellow Jackets, including a 60-51 win at Chapelgate last Friday.

Friends will journey to Frederick to challenge second-seeded St. John’s Catholic Prep (18-11). St. John’s routed the Quakers, 79-48, in Baltimore in late January, but the second meeting was much closer as SJCP clinched the second seed with a 71-63 home win over the Quakers on Valentine’s Day.

Thursday’s winners will battle in the MIAA B Conference Championship Game at Harford Community College’s Aberdeen Proving Grounds Federal Credit Union Arena on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
