Yackulak, Edmonds and Petryszak combine for seven hits and five RBI

Visiting Archbishop Curley scored four runs in the top of the 7th inning to snare a 6-3 come-from-behind baseball victory over Loyola Blakefield on Tuesday afternoon, as the Dons hosted their first-ever MIAA A Conference game at their brand new Veterans Park.

Seniors Brandon Yackulak, Ryan Edmonds and junior John Petryszak paced the 11th-ranked Friars at the plate, and two senior pitchers, James Gladden and Emilio Rodriguez held the Dons to three runs (2 unearned) and 3 hits on the day.

Edmonds, a George Mason commit as a pitcher, had a double, a triple, and an RBI; Petryszak was 3-for-3 with two RBI; and Yackulak was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

It was Yackulak who stroked a two-run double that put the Friars on top in the 7th after the Dons broke a 2-2 tie in the 5th on an RBI single off the bat of Austin Gemmill.

Curley Coach Joe Gaeta got some solid pitching from Gladden and Rodriguez to go along with the clutch hitting.

Gladden went 4.2 innings, holding Loyola to three runs (two unearned) and three hits, and Emilio Rodriguez, who got the win, was outstanding in relief.

Only one Don reached base (on a walk) over his 2.1 innings of work. Five of the seven outs that he registered came on strike outs.

“We had a real good close from Emilio, who has committed to Wilson College, and a good start from Gladden,” said Gaeta. “We got some timely hitting and we had lots of contributions throughout the line-up.”

Loyola skipper Mike Kelly succintly summed up the loss.

“We played a good six inning game, but we didn’t play a good seven inning game, and we need to learn how to finish.

“Baseball games can change on one play. When Curley’s four-run seventh started with a hit batsman, that hit batter was a major part of that big inning.”

A two-base error in the outfield after the hit batsman, put runners on second and third for the Friars, setting the stage for Yackulak’s clutch double.

The Friars (7-3 overall), who are off to a 2-0 start in the A Conference, will host Mount St. Joe on Thursday. Loyola (2-4, 0-2,) will travel to Bel Air to face No. 2 John Carroll on Saturday.
