The Gerstell Academy baseball team is entering just its third year as a varsity level program, yet the Falcons have already established a winning tradition with back-to-back MIAA C Conference playoff appearances.

With the entire team back, including all nine starters, the Falcons are looking to take the next step and compete for a championship.

Sophomore Reece Early returns after proving to be a top varsity performer as a freshman when he batted .477 with four home runs and 24 RBI. He also pitched 29 innings, posting a 2.41 ERA with 47 strikeouts.

Senior Taylor Hodges and junior Matt Szedlock are expected to be the team’s double play combination after strong seasons last year. Hodges batted .400 in 2016 with 17 runs scored and a .438 on-base-percentage, while Szedlock batted .357 with a .438 on-base-percentage and 12 RBI.

Another top returner is senior first-baseman, who hit .413, with a .472 on-base-percentage and 11 RBI. In addition, freshman Chris Hagan, a catcher/infielder, is expected to have an early impact for Gerstell.
