The second week of MIAA A Conference lacrosse competition is in the books as Gilman School and Loyola Blakefield captured home victories Saturday afternoon.
The No. 7 Dons got a hat trick from Furman University-bound attack Phil Wies and Monmouth commit Gavin Dembeck added two goals and two assists in a 12-8 victory over No. 11 Archbishop Spalding at Hargarden Field in Towson.
Will Koras finished with a goal and an assist for Loyola (5-5 overall), and Towson-bound goalie Jake Stout denied 12 shots. Sophomore Will Sherwood led Spalding (6-6) with two goals and three assists and Pat Mangan tallied twice.
Gilman (7-4) used a five-goal second half surge to defeat Mount St. Joseph at Alexander Sotir Stadium in Roland Park. Senior attack Austin Hudson scored three goals and Piper Bond, Johnny Sharpiro, and Jonathon Hazlehurst each added two goals.
Down two players early in the second half, the Greyhounds emerged unscathed and pulled away from Mount St. Joseph. Junior midfielder Griffin Corbett had two goals and two assists for the Gaels (2-6, 0-4 MIAA A), and Kyle DeCrispino added two goals and an assist.
At 2-2, Gilman is tied with defending champ McDonogh School and 2015 champ St. Mary’s for fifth-place in the country’s toughest boys’ lacrosse league. Loyola and St. Paul’s School, both 3-1, are tied for third.
No. 1 Calvert Hall College and third-ranked Boys’ Latin School are the pole-sitters at 4-0. The top six teams at the end of regular season play will advance to the postseason tournament.
No. 8 Severn School, winless (0-4) after reaching the semifinals last spring, hosts Gilman in a critical match Tuesday. McDonogh hosts St. Paul’s and Loyola travels to Annapolis to take on No. 5 St. Mary’s at Pascal Field.
Thursday, the resurgent Saints are at McDonogh in a match of the last two MIAA A champs. Calvert Hall at Severn, Gilman at St. Paul’s and Loyola at BL highlight Friday’s slate.
