In an early MIAA B Conference league game, St. Vincent Pallotti and Boys’ Latin met on the diamond at Panther Park and in a contest dominated by pitching, the Panthers captured a 3-1 win.
Pallotti senior Corey Dirks outlasted Boys’ Latin hurler Mike Gillespie, tossing a complete game and allowing just four hits and one walk, with 13 strikeouts. The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Matt DeFrank stole home for the game’s first run. Rafi Correa, who earlier walked, scored on a BL error.
Boys’ Latin scored its only run in the third inning to make it 2-1. Charles Lillie started the rally by smacking a double to deep left and later scored on a sac bunt by Parker Yablon.
In the bottom of the third, Pallotti added its final run, as Johnny Maloney scored when Dirks reached base on an error.
Pallotti (2-0, 1-0) loaded the bases in the fourth, but Gillespie was able to pitch out of the jam with a pair of stirke outs. Dirks countered with two strike outs of his own in the BL fifth, when the Lakers placed runners on second and third with just one out. Dirks struck out six of the last nine batters he faced to complete the game. Gillespie struck out five batters in four innings of work, giving up three runs on four hits.
