The race for first place in the MIAA A Conference has been red hot for weeks and as the final full week gets underway defending champion Calvert Hall and Archbishop Curley share the top spot with 9-2 league marks, following Calvert Hall’s 10-1 win over McDonogh on Saturday morning in Owings Mills.
The Cardinals (16-3, 9-2) piled up nine runs over the first five innings and just let pitcher Nick Delp handle the rest. Delp went the distance, allowing six hits and a single unearned run, while striking out four and walking none.
Calvert Hall broke on top with three runs in the second, added one in the fourth and five in the fifth. Brandon Dorsey had a two-run double for the Cardinals and Ben Brooks also had a two-bagger.
Jack Finn led the CHC lineup, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a sacrifice and two knocked in. Troy Stokes also had two hits, a stolen base, a run scored and a couple of RBI. Also collecting a pair of hits each for the Cardinals were Alex Kriss and Tyler Webster.
Calvert Hall has big week ahead. The Cards will host third place St. Paul’s on Monday, travel to Curley on Wednesday and play non-conference foe Riverdale Baptist on Thursday. The Cardinals still have a make-up game to play with Mount St. Joseph as well as league games next week against John Carroll and Loyola.
