Mount St. Joseph basketball senior Darryl Morsell gave a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland Wednesday afternoon. He made the announcement in the library at the Irvington school.

“I’ve always liked Maryland. Growing up in Baltimore always watching Maryland, I have a fever for them because they’re the hometown school,” said Morsell. “But Coach [Mark] Turgeon, the guy he is, and the assistants they have, the entire program. I like what they have and decided to continue my journey there.”

Morsell selected the Terps over Notre Dame. Morsell, a first-team All-Met selection last season as well as an All-Baltimore Catholic League selection, averaged 10.6 points and 5.1 rebounds last season. The Gaels reached the MIAA A Conference and BCL Tournament championship games.

After an impressive run on the summer AAU circuit, Morsell’s stock rose. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard is a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com (No. 93 nationally) and a national Top 60 prospect by Scout.com.
