Archbishop Curley has advanced to the championship game of the 2013 Laker Invitational Tournament and will meet St. Stephens/St. Agnes (VA) on Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., for the title at Boys’ Latin.
Senior forward Haywood Highsmith had combined for 50 points in the first two games to lead the Friars. He scored 28 on Friday afternoon when the Friars surprised host Boys’ Latin with a 64-57 victory. He followed with 22 points on Saturday in a 66-35 semifinal win over Coppin Academy. The win over BL was a double bonus for Curley, as it also counted in the MIAA B Conference standings.
SSSA opened with a 69-38 win over the Avalon School, on Friday, and then edged McDonogh, 50-47, in overtime, in Saturday’s semifinal round. Returning tournament MVP Cameron Gregory has led the Saints.
Against McDonogh, SSAA point guard Gavin Peppers scored an old-fashioned three point play, late in the fourth quarter, to force overtime and 6-foot-9 center Colin Gross pushed the Saints over the top with a put-back dunk in the overtime.
McDonogh, which defeated Grace Bretheren, 50-39, in Friday’s opening round, will meet Coppin Academy at 11 a.m., on Sunday, for third place. Coppin defeated Cristo Rey, 65-51, in Friday’s first round.
On Saturday, the host Lakers routed Cristo Rey, 71-11, and Avalon defeated Grace Bretheren, 73-58.
