MIAA A champs begin a new season with many new faces

Many of the stars that helped Archbishop Curley win 28 games and the MIAA A Conference baseball championship last spring have graduated, but the 2019 Friars are off to good start, winning their season opener, Thursday in Olney, shutting out Good Counsel, 9-0.

Andrew Rickard and Gavin Evans each went 2-for-3 at the top of the Curley order, with Rickard hitting a double and scoring twice, while Evans drove in two runs. In addition, Jake Michel produced a two-run double for the Friars and Jordan Stroud scored a pair of runs.

On the mound, Michel made the start and pitched five innings of one-hit ball, striking out eight and walking one. Rickard tossed the final two innings and struck three Falcons.
