Friars trounce CHEN, 16-3; Munke drives in four runs

A sign that normalcy may soon be upon us, the 2021 high school baseball season started on time, Monday, as Archbishop Curley took the field for its opener. The Friars claimed a 16-3 non-conference win over the Christian Home School Education Network (CHEN) at Blandair Park in Howard County.

The Friars produced 12 hits, including two by Cam Munk, who had a triple, two runs scored and four RBI’s in the victory.

Curley broke on top with three runs in the second and added five more in the third before bringing scoring seven in the fifth which eventually led to a run-rule victory after five complete.

The clinching rally was fueled by singles by Virgil Watson and Cris Banks, a walk by Kevin Goedeke and a double by James Gladden. Zach Gaeta finished with two hits and run scored and Joe Petryszak had a hit, a run scored and a pair of RBI’s.

Jake Michel, who has committed to the University of Richmond, made the start on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings to earn the win. Michel, who figures to be the Friars’ ace this spring, allowed just one hit and stuck out eight, while allowing just one walk.
