St. Paul’s up to No. 6 as MIAA A postseason chase heats up; Glenelg, Mount Hebron set to decide Howard County’s best

by Derek Toney

The last full week of regular season play will feature several critical matches as there’s several changes in the upper half of the latest VSN Boys Lacrosse Top 20 poll.

Unbeaten St. Mary’s is No. 1 for a second straight week, but the Saints have two major MIAA A Conference challenges waiting. Tuesday, St. Mary’s welcomes reigning MIAA A champ and fifth-ranked Boys’ Latin School to Pascal Field in Annapoli. Thursday, the Saints travel up Route 97 for a matchup with Anne Arundel County rival and second-ranked Archbishop Spalding.

Before getting a shot at the Saints, the Cavaliers will go to Towson to take on resurgent and No. 3 Calvert Hall College Tuesday. The Cardinals host fourth-ranked Severn School Friday at Russo Stadium.

Nine of the 10 teams in the MIAA A, the nation’s toughest conference, are alive for the six postseason spots, including St. Paul’s School. The Brooklandville school jumps three spots to No. 6 after handling McDonogh School Friday.

McDonogh, Loyola Blakefield, Broadneck and Severna Park complete the Top 10. The Bruins are on pace to reach the Anne Arundel County final after beating Severna Park Friday evening for the first time since 2015 and ending the Falcons’ 61-game winning streak (including postseason) against Anne Arundel public opponents.

The Howard County title will be decided Wednesday with 14th-ranked Mount Hebron hosting No. 18 Glenelg. Both teams are undefeated in league play.

Defending Baltimore County champ and No. 12 Catonsville can secure a second straight final trip with a victory over Towson Tuesday. No. 15 Fallston and Century have the UCBAC Chesapeake and Carroll County Athletic League titles wrapped up, respectively.
