Saints hoping for another title march in 2019

Will Berzins (left), Alex Wicks and Tommie McKoy are back for St. Mary’s. The Saints have won the last two MIAA B Conference championships.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

St. Mary’s Saints

2018 record: 7-4 (MIAA B Conference champions)

Overview: The Saints won their second straight MIAA B title last season. The Annapolis school will led by center Will Berzins, a 2019 Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick after earning all-league honors last fall along with returning all-league performers Alex Wicks (running back) and Dhane Blair (defensive back) and BTC Super 22 linemen Keith Day.

Toughest 2019 opponent: St. Vincent Pallotti. The Saints defeated the Panthers in the MIAA B final at Good Counsel last season. The Laurel school should contend for the league crown in 2019 with a pair of UMASS commits in senior cornerback/wide receiver Julian Ganthier (all-MIAA B pick in 2018) and senior Osei Dixon (defensive back/wide receiver) along with 2019 Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 selection and returning all-league pick Emani Alford (senior running back/defensive back), senior running back Mekhi McDaniels and senior defensive end DeVahn Newton (both all-MIAA B selections last season).

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Delmar. The Wildcats reached the Delaware Division II state semifinals last season. Junior quarterback/defensive back Dante Trader and senior two-way linemen Masyn Lilly and Chris Elliott will lead Delmar.

By a number: 20. Years since the last team (McDonogh School) won three straight MIAA B titles.
