With practice for the 2018 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

McDonogh School Eagles

2017 record: 6-5 (MIAA A Conference semifinalist)

2017 review: The Eagles tied for second in the MIAA A Conference standings, and lost to eventual champ St. Frances Academy in the semifinals. Hakeem Sule, an assistant under longtime coach Dom Damico, now has reigns after Damico stepped down in the spring. The Owings Mills private school has two of the area’s premier players in senior linemen D’Von Ellies and junior wideout/defensive back Curtis Jacobs.

2018 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2017): 82-37 (.689)

Toughest 2018 opponent: Berks Catholic. The Saints reached the Pennsylvania Division 4 state semifinal last season. Berks features fullback Brandon George, a Pittsburgh recruit, and four-year starting quarterback Terrance Derr.

Most intriguing 2018 opponent: St. Vincent-St. Mary’s. The Ohio school, notably known as LeBron James’ alma-mater, reached the Ohio State Division III semifinals last fall. Junior running back Terrance Keyes, who has early offers from Akron and Kent State, leads the Irish.

By a number: 3. Consecutive losses ending McDonogh’s 2017 season.
