Breakdown of Panthers’ 2017 schedule

With practice for the 2017 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

2016 record: 10-2 (MIAA B Conference champion)

2016 review: The Panthers won their first MIAA B title and second in three seasons (won C in 2014). The Laurel school graduated all-league performers Jarrett and James Patterson (University of Buffalo) and Cameron Sullivan-Brown (Penn State), but quarterback Nasir Edmond returns along with junior defensive end/linebacker Coziah Izzard and running back Blake Corum (all-league pick last fall), who each have several Division I verbal offers.

2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 46-61 (.430)

Toughest 2017 opponent: McDonogh School. The Eagles placed third in the tough MIAA A Conference. The Owings Mills school (No. 3 in final VSN Top 20 poll) have 29 letterwinners back, led by quarterback Dejuan Ellis, a Virginia Tech University commit, and Penn State commit PJ Mustipher (offensive/defensive line).

Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Eleanor Roosevelt. The Raiders are one of the stalwarts in the Prince George’s County public league, arguably the best among state public leagues. Senior defensive back Raymond Boone is committed to the University of Maryland.

By a number: 338. Points scored in seven MIAA B contests (including final) last season. olic since 2007.
