With practice for the 2017 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

St. John’s Catholic Prep Vikings

2016 record: 6-4 (MIAA C Conference champion)

2016 review: The Vikings claimed their first MIAA C title since 2013. Joey Keys (linebacker), Dennis Pittinger (center/defensive tackle) and Andrew Shanley (running back/safety) were all-league performers last season.

2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 30-30 (.500)

Toughest 2017 opponent: Annapolis Area Christian School. The Eagles were denied of a title repeat by St. John’s in last year’s title game. The Anne Arundel County school should be in the championship hunt this season with all-league performers Sam Akinmukomi, Robert Johnson, Thaddeus “TJ” Stanfield (wide receiver/defensive back), Cameron Williams (wide receiver/defensive back) and quarterback Isiah Williams back.

Most intriguing 2017 opponent: John Carroll School. The Patriots will look to rebound and get back to the MIAA B postseason after winning the top prize in 2015. All-league linemen Cody Copinger and senior quarterback Qadir Ismail will lead the Bel Air school.

By a number: 4. MIAA C championships for St. John’s Catholic since 2007.
