Breakdown of Cardinals’ 2017 schedule
With the start of practice for the 2017 high school football season approaching, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Calvert Hall College Cardinals
2016 record: 7-5
2016 review: The Cardinals finished 5th in the MIAA A Conference, the area’s toughest league. The Towson school (No. 12 in final VSN Top 20) return 43 letter-winners with University of Maryland commit Chance Campbell (linebacker) and offensive linemen Reginald Sutton (Rutgers commit), both all-league selections last fall, leading the way.
2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016) 72-56 (.563)
Toughest 2017 opponent: St. Frances Academy. The Panthers had an amazing turnaround last fall going from last place in 2015 to the MIAA A crown and area’s top-ranking. The east Baltimore school, led by four-star defensive end Eyabi Anoma, will be the team to beat in the MIAA A in 2017.
Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Henry A. Wise. The Jaguars from Prince George’s County school is the state’s best public program with back-to-back Class 4A state crowns and 28 consecutive victories. The Upper Marlboro school will feature a big-time secondary with Florida State commit AJ Lyton, the state’s No. 1 recruit by Rivals.com, and Demetri Morsell.
