With a few weeks before the start of practice for the 2012 high school football season, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Boys’ Latin School Lakers

2011 record: 5-7 (MIAA B Conference finalist)

2011 rewind: The Lakers made a late run last season qualifying for the league playoffs with victory in week 10 and upsetting top-seeded Archbishop Curley to reach the title game. The Lake Avenue school graduated all-MIAA B performers Greg Pyke (University of Georgia), Brandon Cherry and Dequan Siggers, but have 29 letterwinners slated back in 2012.

2012 opponents’ win/loss record: 56-38 (.596)

Toughest 2012 opponent: Annapolis Area Christian School. The Eagles have ascended from a fledging MIAA C start-up six seasons ago into B champions last season, capped with a 46-13 romp over the Lakers in the finals. The Odenton school has 34 letterwinners scheduled including All-MIAA B selection Demetrius Johnson.

Most intriguing 2012 opponent: Catonsville. The Comets were arguably the surprise team in 2011, reaching the state Class 4A semifinals. The Baltimore County school won’t be sneaking up on opponents this year, especially with University of Maryland-bound running back DeAndre Lane.

By a number: 17. Total margin in three losses last season.
