Former IND athletic director Frederica Newman assumes the same role at Concordia, while Joseph Battaglia is the Saints’ new football coach

When Josh Ward departed Concordia Prep to become the new head football coach at Calvert Hall earlier this month, he left a pair of key vacancies in the Saints’ athletic department as he served as both athletic director and head football coach.

Monday the school announced that it has filled both both posts, as Frederica Newman has been appointed as the school’s new athletic director and Joseph Battaglia has been hired to lead the football program.

Frederica Newman

Newman has worked in local high school athletics and as an educator since 2007, most recently serving as the athletic director at the Institute of Notre Dame, which announced in the spring that it was closing its doors.

She had worked at IND since 2018 where she also coached the varsity lacrosse team. In 2007 she became an assistant basketball and lacrosse coach at Bryn Mawr School and stayed there until accepting a full-time teaching position at St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel in 2013. At Pallotti she served as the defensive coordinator of the girls’ lacrosse team and, in 2015, she began serving the assistant athletic director, while continuing teach and coach lacrosse.

Battaglia comes to Concordia after an extensive coaching career in the college football ranks, most recently at the Naval Academy, as the program’s Defensive Quality Control Analyst.

Joseph Battaglia

In 2019, Navy had one of the greatest seasons in school history, going 11-2 and winning the Commander-In-Chief Trophy, earning a share of the American Athletic Conference West Division title and winning the Liberty Bowl. The Midshipmen’s defense played a major role in their success.

Navy finished the 2019 campaign ranked 20th in third-down defense (121st in 2018), 10th in rushing defense (90th in 2018), 39th in passing defense (75th in 2018), 16th in total defense (86th in 2018), 34th in scoring defense (103rd in 2018), 68th in pass efficiency defense (117th in 2018), 55th in sacks (129th in 2018) and 53rd in tackles for a loss (129th in 2018).

Prior to Navy, Battaglia spent two seasons as the Defensive Coordinator at Bethany College in West Virginia. His resume also includes a stint as the defensive coordinator at Division II Brevard College, a term as the defensive backs coach at Midwestern State University and stops on the defensive staffs of Stevenson University and Juniata College.

He also has some international experience, leading the 2019 U-17 U.S. National Team to a 51-7 win over Mexico and the 2018 U-16 U.S. National Team to a 47-0 win over Mexico. In 2017, he helped the U.S. U-18 Select Team claim a 27-7 win over Team Ontario in the International Bowl held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
