With four teams locked in a tight first-place battle in the MIAA A Conference baseball standings, No. 2 Calvert Hall visited No. 1 Archbishop Spalding, Thursday, and made things even tighter, with a 9-3 win over the Cavaliers.

Spalding (15-3, 7-3) has held the top spot in the league since March 24th when it knocked off Calvert Hall, 5-4, in Towson.  Thursday’s loss, however, pushed the Cavaliers back to fourth place, only percentage points behind Archbishop Curley, Calvert Hall and St. Paul’s, who are now tied for first place at 6-2.

Calvert Hall right-hander Nick Delp threw a complete game five-hitter, surrendering just two earned runs, and he added insult to injury, pounding a double and a single to help his own cause at the plate.  Delp drove in two runs for the Hall, and he drew two walks.

Troy Stokes was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, and he made a great running catch in left-center to rob Spalding’s Billy Godrick of extra bases leading off the Cavalier sixth. The grab seemed to energize Delp, who then fanned the next two Spalding hitter’s to end the inning.

“Everything was working,” said Delp, who improved to 5-0 on the mound this season for coach Lou Eckerl. “I was throwing strikes, hitting my spots, and the guys were making the plays.”

Stokes led an 11-hit Calvert Hall attack. “They were giving me strikes, giving me a ball to hit, and I just wanted to put it in play.”   Stokes said that the Hall offense has picked up because they are getting more reps.  “We’ve been coming in early to hit.”

It was cold and windy again on Thursday, but Stokes said that the wind wasn’t that much of a factor. “But I know my first double stayed fair because of the wind”.

Cardinal designated hitter Alex Kriss chipped in with a double and a single and a RBI, and Brandon Dorsey had a RBI.

David Harding and Paul Diven each had a pair of hits for Spalding, and Diven had a RBI.

The Hall will host McDonogh in conference play next Tuesday, and St. Paul’s will host Spalding next Thursday, as the league leaders continue to collide.
