The year after losing nearly every key contributor from a team that swept the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League basketball championships, Calvert Hall surprised many by rebounding to win 17 games last year. The Cardinals did it mostly behind an outstanding sophomore class that knew how to score the basketball.

A year older and more experienced, that group along with some even younger talent, is back as the Cardinals continue to build towards another title run.

The top returner is junior guard Brendan Adams, who averaged 13 points per game last year and was an All-MIAA and All-BCL selection.

Also back from the junior class are 6-2 guard Josh Cornish,  6-4 forward Peter Ilardo and 6-2 guard Logan Curtis. Senior guard/forward Cameron briggs also returns for head coach John Bauersfeld, now in his 10th year with his alma mater.

Another player drawing national attention has not even played a single minute for the Cardinals. It’s 6-foot-7 freshman Justin Lewis, who was one of just 56 high school players selected to participate USA Basketball’s Men’s Junior National Team Minicamp in October. Lewis has already been identified as one of the nation’s top players in the class of 2020 and should make a big impact for the Cardinals as the season progresses.

The Cardinals also have another top freshman who will contribute early in his high school career in 6-5 Montez McNeil.

“We need to be able to rebound and get stops defensively in order for us to score in transition and play at the pace we want,” said Bauersfeld.
