No. 3 Calvert Hall continued a strong first week in MIAA A Conference baseball, downing visiting McDonogh, 8-2, on the turf Friday night in Towson.
McDonogh jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead, as Paul DiPino and Alex Parker each stroked RBI doubles. The Eagles, however, only managed one more hit the rest of the way as Calvert Hall surged from behind.
In the bottom of the second, the Cardinals (4-0, 3-0) scored three times to take the lead for good. Daniel Torres put the Cards on the board with a triple that plated Nate Bosse. Torres scored on a fielders choice and Ian Elliott added a RBI double before the inning ended. Elliott was the only player on either team to have two base hits in the ballgame.
In the fourth, Calvert Hall added a run as Nick Delp picked up a RBI with a bases loaded bunt single. The Cardinals then capped off the scoring with four in the sixth as they loaded the bases and benefitted from a hit batter and two errors.
Bradley Weber made the start for Calvert Hall, working four innings and earning the win while striking out four. Ben Stewart tossed one inning and Reed Matson pitched the final two innings, striking out three.
McDonogh slipped to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
